Neon Reverie Shaders
Work in Progress (WIP): Neon Reverie is currently in active development. Visual refinements, compatibility improvements, and further optimizations are still ongoing.
Neon Reverie expands upon the Complementary foundation with a more cinematic and fantasy-oriented visual direction. It transforms the balanced semi-realistic style of Complementary Reimagined into a softer, more atmospheric, and emotionally expressive Minecraft experience.
Originally inspired by cinematic shader aesthetics, Neon Reverie focuses on immersive environments, dreamlike atmospheres, and visual storytelling. It combines refined lighting, redesigned volumetric effects, enhanced materials, expanded dimension visuals, and carefully crafted color grading while preserving the stability and compatibility of its original foundation.
Features & Highlights
Softer Lighting & Atmospheric Shadows
Warmer and gentler ambient lighting with smoother dynamic shadow transitions, refined edge filtering, reduced redraw stutter, and improved shadow consistency across terrain, water surfaces, and underwater environments.
Neon Reverie shifts the lighting style toward a softer and more atmospheric presentation, emphasizing mood and depth while maintaining comfortable gameplay visibility.
Fluffy Volumetric Clouds
Custom rounded marshmallow-style volumetric clouds with increased scale, thicker lower volumes, organic silhouettes, improved cluster separation, and optimized distant rendering.
Designed to create a softer fantasy sky with more depth and character while maintaining real-time performance.
Refined Water Rendering
Reworked water normals, reflections, refractions, underwater viewing paths, and color transitions for a clearer and more balanced appearance.
Water rendering is tuned toward a cleaner cinematic style, with improved material separation, smoother optical transitions, and more stable screen-space effects.
Reworked Ice Materials
Dedicated material and reflection pipelines for regular ice, blue ice, packed ice, and frosted ice.
Improved translucency, environmental reflections, specular response, and material blending create a more natural integration between ice surfaces and surrounding environments.
Water Droplet Refraction
A fading screen-space water droplet effect appears after surfacing from water, creating a short-lived refractive distortion before gradually clearing.
This effect adds a subtle cinematic touch to underwater transitions without becoming distracting during normal gameplay.
Expanded Night Skies
Enhanced nighttime environments featuring purple-blue nebulae, subtle pink celestial accents, and green aurora borealis.
The night sky is designed as an atmospheric scene rather than a simple lighting enhancement, adding more depth, color, and fantasy elements to nighttime exploration.
Dimension Atmosphere
The Nether
Red-orange drifting volumetric mist with improved depth, visibility, and atmospheric distribution, creating a heavier and more immersive environment while preserving the distinctive Nether atmosphere.
The End
A redesigned cosmic atmosphere featuring shooting stars, deep-space nebulae, enhanced blue-purple atmospheric depth, and a glowing purple void cloud layer.
Cinematic Presets & Color Grading
A rebuilt post-processing system focused on cinematic image creation and emotional color expression.
Includes configurable tone profiles, white balance, exposure, contrast, vibrance, bloom, depth of field, vignette, lens flare, motion blur, chromatic aberration, sharpening, anti-aliasing, and more.
Included presets:
- Survival (Neutral) — Balanced clarity and comfortable visuals designed for long gameplay sessions.
- Cinematic - Pink (Rose Warm) — A warm and dreamlike style designed for sunsets, cherry groves, snowy landscapes, and fantasy environments.
- Cinematic - Orange (Filmic Warmth) — Richer warm highlights, stronger cinematic contrast, and a film-inspired atmosphere for screenshots, videos, and golden-hour scenes.
Expanded Customization
Additional style controls for glass, water, volumetric clouds, and post-processing allow advanced users to fine-tune the visual experience directly through shader settings.
Compatibility & Localization
Built for Minecraft Java Edition through Iris, with native compatibility for Distant Horizons (DH) and Voxy.
Shader settings are available in 8 languages.
Compatibility & Feedback
Neon Reverie is primarily developed and tested on Apple Silicon (macOS) using recent versions of Iris.
The shader uses relatively conservative rendering implementations and retains much of the established compatibility foundation of Complementary Reimagined. However, testing across different GPUs, operating systems, graphics drivers, Minecraft versions, and third-party configurations is currently limited.
If you encounter any rendering issues, compatibility problems, visual bugs, or unexpected behavior on any platform, feedback is welcome.
